Hi.
I currently still live with my parents. We have three cats. My mum pays for their food and does the majority of the feeding. I am almost vegan.
However, I plan on living on my own one day and would like to have a dog and, maybe, a cat. Cats need meat. Dogs, however, can survive on vegan diets, apparently. However, I have heard that they can suffer on vegetarian diets. In a way, I wouldn't want to feed my dog on meat because it would support industries that involve unnecessary violence and it would be against my beliefs but, in a way, I think that (for me) part of being a dog is eating meat. I would also want to do what was best for my dog, at the end of the day...
What are your views? What would your advise be?

When I was young our dog often ate the same as the family. So generally speaking if it's OK for you, its OK for the dog. I would certainly make use of any leftovers to feed the dog. There are a few suggestions on the internet on how to make DIY vegan dog food, for example here http://www.care2.com/greenliving/fe...5065467082362&action=expand_widget&id=0&data=
Dog food can be ridiculously expensive if you want the good stuff and even the good stuff is not so good - read the labels. I think making your own could be cheaper and healthier. I think the dried dog food is particularly bad, though it is convenient.
My dogs love fruit, which surprised me. It's worth experimenting.

Reactions: Vegan Dogs
There are plenty vegan dogs and cats. They live healthy full lives. QED. Quad Est Demonstratum. There is nothing more to argue about after that FACT and TRUTH. My dogs are health hyper energetic vegan dogs. Bramble the Guinness World Book of REcords dog in 2002 edition lived to 25 years old. Loads more full lives healthy dogs and cats. http://vegan-information.com/Vegan_Dogs_and_Cats.html
