Does anyone here know if the WHO are using animals in research? Would my donation support the use of animals in research?
Hello 👋,
I really want to donate to the World Health Organisation’s COVID-19 Appeal, but I also don’t want the money to be used on animal experiments... Would the money donated be used on research involving animals?
I can’t find the info I want online. I have tried messaging them, but no human replies.
Please help ASAP.
Thank you 😊.

Per this report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, animal testing does not necessarily qualify a drug to be approved for use in the United States: Animal Rule Information . However, that doesn't mean that animal testing isn't used during the drug development process.

Here's something to perhaps consider: If a COVID-19 vaccine isn't developed, then people will continue to need treatment for severe COVID-19 infections. That treatment will require medicines - medicines that are/were tested on animals. Either way, animals are used.

If you prefer not to donate to the WHO, another idea would be to donate to organizations that use lifestyle-modification to treat the diseases which increase the severity (and the likelihood of death) of COVID-19. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov), people are more likely to die from COVID-19 if they have chronic obesity, diabetes, lung disease, or heart disease: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) . These conditions can be effectively treated through lifestyle changes, allowing reduction or elimination of drug treatments.

WHO is a specialised agency of the UN that focus on global health issues by collecting information. They don't own laboratories that experiment on animals, however, they do set up guidelines for the former. One of their main roles is to ensure that the highest standards are used when necessary.

So in a certain way, they do promote testing on animals which I have understood is the information that you are requesting.
