TV & Film Doctor Who (Spoilers!)

My cable company is showing a bunch of Doctor Who shows starting with the 9th doctor. I'm on the 10th doctor now, and I've noticed that they borrow ideas from other shows and stories. For example, in the devil/black hole episode, the alien miners looks a lot like D&D mind Flayers and/or Cthulu.

In another episode, they had an absorption alien that reminded me a lot of "fat *******" from Austin Powers, and in that same episode, they made of fun their fans, just like X files did in one of their shows. I've seen a few more examples that I can't think of right now.

We don't talk about this episode.

In any case, I'm enjoying the "modern" Doctor Who. The last time I watched the show, the scarf guy with curly hair was playing the doctor. I've noticed that they make an effort to make the show appeal to women, not just male Sci-Fi geeks.

That's good to hear! :D

Also, why is there so much dislike for the 9th doctor?

People are crazy if they didn't like Chris. Anyways, it's probably because Tennant's fame overshadowed him a lot.

How fitting that this should be on the eleventh page!

I'm not sad, though? Like his regeneration wasn't emotional. It wasn't sad. It was badass, sure, considering he took out like 800 Daleks, but not sad. Or maybe I just don't care enough about the Ponds' storyline for the last part to be emotionally effective on me. And then suddenly, BAM, Capaldi out of nowhere. And he forgot how to fly the TARDIS? What was with that?

It's not that I'm not sad to see Matt go, his regeneration was just very underwhelming. Most of the episode was good, and there are surprisingly few ******* Moffat moments, but it just didn't have the effect I wanted it to. I wanted to cry, dammit! Like Tennant made me cry.

Okay, sorry to post again, but now that I haven't been awake for 23 hours straight, I think it'd be fair to re-examine this episode:

Overall I enjoyed this, but let's start with what was awful.

Worst part of the episode: the Doctor treated Clara like ****. I know he's supposed to be old and tortured and want to keep her safe. I also know that, in terms of sending her away, Nine did a similar thing with Rose. But with Rose, I had the feeling that Nine really cared for her, and what he did seemed like a calculated decision looking out for someone's best interests, whereas with Clara it just felt like he was casting her aside. The whole episode (in fact, throughout her whole arc) Clara just kept helping the Doctor over and over and he kept throwing her under the bus. Also, what was with him telling the Daleks to go ahead and kill her? We got a bit more clarification when Clara said "you'd kill me anyway," so I suppose we're expected to assume that the Doctor had a similar mindset in saying that, but it still felt really dickish and not at all like the Doctor.

There were also a few sexist jokes, and a few sexist plot elements, of course, because it was Moffat and Moffat does that. :| Examples would include the whole "now THIS is a woman!" crap, as well as basically the entire Church of the Papal Mainframe arc. Like, this lady, Tasha, who we're supposed to assume the Doctor was involved with at some point (because in Moffat's show the Doctor has to be involved with freaking everyone), just straight up rejects her Dalek hijacking? How? Through the power of magic Doctor love? And was she good or bad? When did she switch back and forth? Pretty sure she was being an *** to the Doctor before she was ever hijacked by the Daleks, so why did saving her from the Dalek save him from her?

Oh, and what was the deal with the turkey? Like did they just realize it needed to be exposed to heat? They didn't really use the time machine as a time machine, just as an oven. Whatever.

Regeneration felt forced. Plus, Moffat seems to be forgetting about the fact that River gave the Doctor her regeneration energy. Why not just use that to let him regenerate? It might bring a tiny bit more meaning to the train wreck that is the Doctor/River relationship. Wiping out a planet full of creatures, even evil ones, does not seem like something the Doctor would do, but I suppose after centuries of watching them kill your friends you might get a little ******.

Now, for what I think redeems the episode: the Trenzalore arc was excellent. Watching the Doctor grow old and sad and continue to fight his enemies was brilliant, and it added some much-needed depth to Eleven. Moffat's always trying to play him off as the "tortured Doctor" when he really just isn't, and this gave him a reason to actually be upset and angry. Tying in the Silence as confessional priests was a great bit, I doubt it was planned but nevertheless it works (and much better than some of Moffat's other stupid retcons, like in the Season 5 & 7 Weeping Angels episodes).

Looking forward to Capaldi!

Ok, 3rd episode of series 5, the daleks are back!

But their new look is far less intimidating. Almost like metallic power rangers...

So what do you guys think of this article? Is his opinion in line with yours?

I agree completely. Matt Smith did a brilliant job, but portrayed an erratically written character. I think he is what made the show watchable during Moffat's run.

The Article said:
The entirety of Season Six is when Moffat’s fascination for plot twists and open-ended mysteries (in our house, we describe this unfortunate tendency as “plotty-wotty”) took over the show, and the whole product suffered.

Heh.

I just finished watching the last episode in series 4 of the 10th doctor.

Please tell me that the daleks aren't really gone for good....
If only. I haven't even seen the rest of David Tennant's run as The Doctor yet, but I'm sick of the Daleks, even though they're far more badass and menacing than they ever were in the Fourth Doctor's day. And while we're on the subject, I'm sick of The Master too.

Yea, I never cared for the master either. I liked the daleks, but now that they've been turned into power rangers, it's not going to be the same.

FortyTwo, I must be a bit out of the loop with The Doctor. Is that cartoon you posted (in post 212) David Tennant's Doctor with Jack Harkness and Martha (from the episode when they all traveled far in the future, almost to the end of the universe- Jack had grabbed onto the outside of the TARDIS as it dematerialized and followed them)? I'm not sure I get it... I probably don't remember all of that episode...

It's because Cpt Jack boinks everyone. That's how there's always human DNA in the mix. He travels through time and, uh, refreshes the gene pool. :p :pickle: (It's a dancing pickle, get it? Lol, I slay myself)

Doesn't sound out of the loop to me!
