TV & Film Doctor Who (Spoilers!)

My bf bought a gadget with the brand name ATMOS. Even has ATMOS printed on the side in big letters. Freaks me the hell out.

Why would someone do that?

Perhaps this goes under Unpopular Opinions, but I think Moffat's S1-S4 episodes are really, really good. Some of the best in the series.

But I've seen some of the later episodes and I'm not sure I like them. It seems he writes best when he's forced to do it sparingly.

I haven't seen any Dr. Who, apart from an episode or two. Where is the best place to start watching? I read that lots of people started where 2005 picked up, but some started much, much earlier, like when Tom Baker played the Dr. in the 70's.

2005 is easiest. You can go back further after.
^ This. From what I've seen so far of the older show, the modern one is much easier to follow and consistently good. That's not to say that the old show doesn't have merit - it's certainly very interesting. But it'd also be quick to become very lost in, judging by the ridiculous amount of information that has been introduced in the show. The reboot does a great job of handling old concepts and characters in the same universe and introducing them softly to new viewers, while still referencing and going back to episodes from the old series for viewers of the classic era.

Also - and this is just an opinion, so take it as you will - don't be discouraged if you don't care for the first few episodes of the 2005 series. I've always found them to be kind-of off-putting and I'm glad I watched through more of the show after watching them, because the quality improves immensely from the first episode to the end of Series 1 and stays very good from then on.

Yeah, I always hate how people will watch the first episode or two of a show, say it sucks, and stop watching it completely. It takes shows a while to flesh out, and build things up.

Thanks for the feedback; I will start with 2005. I am just not sure when I'll be able to start it. Exciting, though!

I have been rewatching DW with my boyfriend (now a Whovian :D).

The second time around, I can't stand Rose. I still like Donna and Martha, though.

We are on Series 6 now. Series 5 was better this time, but that may be because we skipped the boring episodes (Hungry Earth, The Lodger, etc). Tonight we watched the first two in Series 6, so we're working our way to catching up.

Previously, I had given up on Doctor Who. I got to Let's Kill Hitler, which was insanely sexist, and just couldn't handle anymore. Amy and Rory are completely useless, and Eleven just seems plain mean. River I could take or leave. I'll just keep watching and looking forward to a post-Moffat Doctor Who.

Yeah, I think that between ten and eleven, it's like watching a totally different show. I don't feel like there was this much of a gap between 9 and 10. :/

I still look forward to it every week, but I after these three episodes, I don't really feel compelled to watch them again and agian, like I have with past seasons.

I completely agree with this. My boyfriend said the same thing. It is like an entirely different show. I think partly because Moffat made it so that there is no mention of anything that happens in Series 1-4. Eleven never says anything about Rose, Martha, Donna, Jack, etc. There are no references to events that took place before he regenerated, something that gave the RTD's DW continuity. Everything is just so new and different.

I really dislike her character as well. Annoying and rude, but not rude in a funny way. Whereas Donna was rude in a likeable and hilarious way. The same goes for Rose's mother - she's a hoot.

My mother loves Rose. She's watching the show for the first time. We're on Season 2...

I looooooove Jackie so much.

Just watched David Tennant's last episode. :(

I find it kinda amusing that the Doctor can remember the specific people from the first colonization of Mars, but doesn't seem to remember that time that he saved Earth from his own destroyed home planet being chucked at it. Surely that has to go in history books...

Currently talking to myself in this thread. Oh well. I'll post my opinion on Eleven's series anyway:

It's good.

Compared to most TV, it's very good. And it's Doctor Who. But it's not great. Nine and Ten's episodes were fantastic. Of course, they were mostly composed of monster-of-the-day kind of things, and generic action adventures, and they were always ridiculous, but there's something about them, especially certain ones, that is, for lack of a better word, deep. Profound. A bit emotional.

With Eleven's episodes, it's just like, whee! We're going on space-y adventures! Wibbly wobbly timey-wimey, woohoo! And I know that's how the show is, but there's just a certain thing that's not there that was there in the older episodes. Maybe it's the character of the Doctor? I'm not sure if I like how that has changed. Already a few episodes after his gigantic breakdown involving guns and he's pointing them around like he's totally comfortable with it? Being so condescending to Amy in The Eleventh Hour? I can definitely see where all the claims of sexism come from. Perhaps these episodes get a bit too much hate, but I can definitely see why such claims are made, and reasonably substantiated.

Matt Smith does an excellent job at playing the character he's been given. I'm finding that I like him much more than I thought I was going to. I don't really agree with the character he's been given, however, though I suppose the Doctor's been through enough personality changes where it shouldn't be surprising.

I'm giving it a chance, and I'm enjoying it, even if it's not the same. Which it isn't. I'm not sure exactly what went weird with it, especially considering that some of my favorite episodes of the past seasons have been Moffat ones. Maybe he's like George Lucas - when moderated, fantastic, but when allowed to go all-out, way too crazy.
