Bavarian Interior Minister: Ansbach attack linked to Islamist terrorism | News | DW.COM | 25.07.2016
A video alluding to the Islamic State militia has been found by police on the mobile phone of the bomber in Ansbach, says Bavaria's interior minister. Joachim Herrmann says the Syrian was a rejected asylum-seeker.
...
"A video made by the assailant was found on his mobile phone in which he threatened an attack," Herrmann said, referring to the Ansbach bombing.

Shortly after Herrmann's announcement, Islamic State's mouthpiece, the agency Aamaq, claimed that the Ansbach perpetrator had been one of IS' "soldiers."

German authorities have not yet identified the 27-year-old.

"After that he announced in the name of Allah that he pledged allegiance to (IS chief) Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the well-known Islamist leader, and he announced an act of revenge against Germans because they were standing in the way of Islam." Herrmann said.

Herrmann said two weeks ago the federal BAMF agency for migration and refugees had ordered the Syrian to leave Germany and return to Bulgaria, where he had first applied for asylum.

@robert99 An Irish friend of mine has been staying in Germany the last couple months... I'm not sure where, exactly... we've been out of contact since he left. Needless to say, I'm a tad worried.

Do you know if a list of victims' names from the recent attacks has been released yet??

The people who got attacked on the train were from Hong Kong, the woman killed on the street was from Poland, the kid at Munich killed no one from Ireland, so that leaves only the guy outside the music festival. He only injured people but managed to kill himself.

German police on Wednesday arrested a 19-year-old Algerian refugee who had fled a psychiatric facility earlier in the day yelling, “I’ll blow you up,” ending the latest in a string of incidents that have set the country’s nerves on edge.

German federal police arrested the asylum-seeker at the Bremen main train station after an hours-long manhunt that prompted the evacuation of a Bremen shopping center, according to police in the neighboring state of Lower Saxony.

(Seems like these sort of stories might carry on for a while yet ...)

“We need to hold mosques more responsible when it comes to prevention among teenagers.”
On Wednesday night, police raided a mosque believed to be a “hot spot” for Islamic extremists in the city of Hildesheim.

According to

from October last year, at least 19 people connected with the mosque in Hildesheim have travelled to Syria to fight.
(This must have planned before the week's incidents - 400 police, raid the mosque and 8 apartments at the same time. Going from the armourment, they expected resistance)

This has been resolved in the meantime. According to updates, the person was enraged about getting committed to a mental institution (this commitment has since been remanded by the official authorities) and he was released again by police after they had ascertained that he is not likely dangerous.

He was arrested earlier by the police on suspicion of petty theft and trespass and committed to a mental institution (which has since been countermanded by an official psychiatrist).

"Welcome culture" was the phrase used as Germany suddenly opened its borders.

Since then, the flow of migrants into Germany has hugely decreased as borders have closed and agreements such as the EU's deal with Turkey have kept many would-be migrants well away from Germany.

But the legacy of last year's mass arrivals is still very tricky for Germany - and even more so given recent violent incidents, some of which have been linked to recent migrants.

Saudi Arabia to aid German investigators over attacks: report | News | DW.COM | 06.08.2016
The "Spiegel" report said new findings had shown that up until shortly before their crimes, both attackers had been in close contact via a chat conversation with possible supporters of the jihadist group "Islamic State" (IS) in Saudi Arabia.

Traces of the chats indicated that both men had been not only been influenced by the unknown IS backers, but had even received instructions on how to proceed, the report said.

According to "Spiegel," one of the attackers, a 17-year-old thought to be from Pakistan or Afghanistan, had initially been told to drive a car into a crowd. The attacker rejected the idea on the grounds that he didn't have a driver's license. Instead, he employed an ax to assault passengers on a train near the southern city of Würzburg on July 18, seriously wounding five people before being shot dead by police.

The report said investigators had concluded that the other attacker, who died when the explosives he was carrying in a backpack detonated, was meant to set them off by remote control in a crowd at a music festival in the town of Ansbach, also in the southern state of Bavaria.

Shortly before the July 24 attack took place, his chat contact had called on him to film the explosion and the resulting fire and send the film to IS, "Spiegel" said. But the explosives detonated prematurely, killing the 27-year-old Syrian attacker and injuring 15 other people.

To the German authorities, he was Mohammad Daleel, a 27-year-old Syrian traumatized by war who arrived in Europe seeking refuge.

To the Islamic State, he was Abu Yousef, a jihadist who went to Europe for medical treatment after being wounded, intending to return to battle.

Nearly two weeks after he became Germany’s first suicide bomber, detonating a backpack filled with chemicals and sharp metal bits outside a music festival in the southern town of Ansbach, his actual identity and motives remain unclear.

Raids took place in several German cities in the states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony on Wednesday morning, with police targeting three Islamist preachers suspected of recruiting members and backers for the extremist group "Islamic State" (IS), German public prosecutors said.

A spokesman for the prosecutors' office in Karlsruhe told DPA news agency that one of the Islamists was believed to have given financial and logistical support to the group. He said that no arrests had been made so far.

Police officials confirmed that searches had been carried out in the cities of Dortmund, Duisburg and Hildesheim.

Four terror arrests on 'vague tip' in western Germany | News | DW.COM | 11.08.2016
German authorities say four suspects from a refugee hostel are now in custody after a "vague tip" that an attack was planned on a German Bundesliga football match. All four are being held in the town of Dinslaken.
NRW Interior Minister Ralf Jäger had said Wednesday that the first of the four - a 24-year-old Syrian asylum seeker - had been arrested at Mutterstadt in adjacent Rhineland-Palatine state last Friday.

Court custody orders were being sought for all four. His arrest had resulted from a "vague tip" from someone who thought he or she had "heard something," Jäger told reporters.

German right-wing populist movement put under surveillance | News | DW.COM | 12.08.2016
The "Identity Movement for Germany" (IBD) is being watched by Germany's intelligence services. The group regards Europe's increased immigration as a conspiracy of the global economy, politics and the media.
Germany's intelligence services confirmed on Friday that the right-wing grou IBD is being monitored in nine of Germany's 16 states, including Bavaria, Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony.

"We see evidence in the "Identity Movement" of unconstitutional efforts," German Intelligence Services Chief Hans-Georg Maassen said.
The group, which has its roots in France, first arrived in Germany in 2012 and has developed offshoots across Europe.
Maassen warned on Friday that it was Germany's youth that was particularly susceptible to these "methods of propaganda."

Rivals seek to stop Petry power play as split AfD meets | Germany | DW.COM | 13.08.2016
Overall, things are looking good for Alternative for Germany (AfD). Founded in 2013, the party has profited from growing security fears and the dialogue surrounding the asylum policies put in place by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Despite the good news for the AfD, an internal power struggle has been raging for months. The party was at risk of breaking up in summer 2015, when co-chief Frauke Petry ousted founder Bernd Lucke. This turned off AfD supporters, causing the party's popularity to plummet. It was only after discontent with Merkel's refugee policies began to grow that the AfD was able to grow its numbers again.

Now, Petry faces her own internal challengers: Co-Chairman Jörg Meuthen and the further-right AfD state bosses from Brandenburg and Thuringia, Alexander Gauland and Björn Höcke, respectively. The men hope to check Petry's power and ensure that she doesn't become the AfD's main candidate in the 2017 general elections.

German arrested on suspicion of selling gun to Munich shooter
Police on Tuesday arrested an armed 31-year-old German man who boasted during a sting operation that he had supplied the Glock 17 pistol used by the gunman who killed nine people in Munich on July 22, the Frankfurt state prosecutor said in a statement.

Authorities arrested the man, who was not named, in Marburg, about 100 km (68 miles) north of Frankfurt, after contacting him on the so-called "dark net" and posing as buyers for an automatic weapon and another Glock 17 pistol for 8,000 euros ($9,021.60), it said.
The man's claims were supported by evidence gathered by the Munich prosecutor's office and Bavarian state police, the statement said.
It said the suspect was identified during an investigation into illegal weapons purchases by a 62-year-old accountant from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and a 17-year-old student from the state of Hesse.

Germany resumes weapons shipments to Iraqi Kurds | News | DW.COM | 17.08.2016
Germany has resumed weapons shipments to Iraqi Kurdistan, where forces are battling "Islamic State" fighters. Germany halted the shipments in January after a media report found some of the weapons on the black market.

The shipment included 1,500 rifles, 1 million rounds of ammunition, three armored vehicles and 100 MILAN guided missiles. Peshmerga fighters regard the anti-tank MILAN as a valuable weapon against IS suicide truck bombs on Kurdish frontline positions.

Germany has sent more than 2,000 tons of weapons in more than 30 shipments to the Iraqi Kurds since the first weapons were delivered in September 2014. Germany also has about 150 troops in northern Iraq training Kurdish forces alongside other nations in the anti-IS coalition. Kurdish forces have also been trained in Germany.
