Anyone seen this movie? Or read the book?

Thoughts or opinions? (Having read the book or watched the movie is not a requirement!)

I've not watched the movie, but according to some sources, the movie is about some rich dude who's raping his GF. Doesn't sound very enjoyable, to be honest. Maybe I should spend my money on that Nymphomanic movie instead?

This may be a very unpopular opinion, but after hearing everyone rave about the book when it first came out, acting like it was the greatest book ever written, I jumped on the wagon and bought it for my kindle, even though it didn't sound like something I'd be interested in. My curiosity got the best of me.

So, I read it. Thought it was pretty bad. Like a step above a Harlequin romance novel (yes, I read a few in my younger years). It was very disappointing to me and a total waste of time.

I haven't been the least bit interested in reading the books, and even less interested in seeing the movie. My FB feed is currently inundated with posts from women I know, friends and co-workers and some family as well, acting like horny teenagers thinking this movie is the best thing since Magic Mike (another movie I have no interest in...lol).

Like I said, I didn't read the books, but I have heard and read about them lots. What I don't get is, how is this movie not porn? I mean, I assume it's not since it's being shown in cinemas? I don't know. I guess I'll have to wait and see what the aforementioned "horny teenagers" have to say about it after they see it.

Simply go to goodreads and read the best-rated reviews of the book.
They will give you the impression that you do not really need to read the book :)
Out of the ten highest-rated reviews, 8 are 1-star reviews and 2 are 5-star reviews. So obviously a bit polarizing.

Apart from being a bad story, it is obviously also written pretty poorly.
Its appeal to the target group is most likely the raunchy parts.

A friend of my wife liked the book very much, together with her husband, so my wife picked up the book when she was at her place and read the first 50 pages or so. Her verdict also was that it was really poor, even though my wife was a big fan of the "Twilight" books and movies.

Best regards,
Andy

I had no interest in reading it, I'm not into fanfic, especially poorly written fanfic at that. The writer's group I'm in uses that (and Twilight) as encouragement; it shows that even the worst writers have hope of being published.

This just in: first "review" of the movie via my Facebook feed.

"WELL!!! WELL!!! WELL!!! Fifty shades of disappointment!"

I can't say I'm surprised...lol

I was going to buy the book until someone said (it might have been on VB) to look at the reviews on Amazon! I had thought it was a more adult version of a Twilight type book.

I've read that it is a very twisted representation of a BDSM relationship as the man is meant to be abusive. I'm not going to read it or see the film to find out.:D

The books are badly written, and they glorify an abusive relationship.

I can't imagine any movie which uses that as a base material is going to be good.

I'm so happy my post wasn't an unpopular opinion! Lol

It's not at all! I've only ever read bad reviews of the book.:p

I just saw that they are saying that they are expecting a spike in emergency calls for people getting stuck or hurt in sexual related accidents. :fp:

BBC News - Fifty Shades of Grey 999 call spike expected by London Fire Brigade

Someone I knew had a male friend that got stuck in a sex contraception (of some kind I can't remember what it was) in their house and the woman had to call the fire brigade to get him cut out of it. Now that would be embarrassing.

I'm showing my age but I remember when there was a big fuss and hype around the Sharon Stone film Basic Instinct and I thought that was really bad when I finally saw it.

I don't mind sex in films if it's well done. Secretary was good and I quite liked the film Chloe.

There is a whole TV show called Sex Landed Me In The ER.

Sounds interesting.

I think you meant to write "a sex contraption."

Contraception = birth control, so no need for the fire department. :)

:rofl:OMG that's funny. That must have been a Freudian slip as I was trying to remember the name of the thing. Sex ladder or rack?

Everyone at work was reading this when it was new, and they all LOVED it. I haven't read it. I downloaded a copy for free just to see how awful it was and it's terrible. the writing was soo bad. I did the first chapter then quit. So yeah I have no desire to watch the film. The more I read about it's abusive nature the more it puts me off. I worry for people who'll read this book and think that kind of behaviour is 'normal'.

As a book lover can I point out how much it annoys me that the only books that get popular are terrible. There are sooo many amazing authors out there, why does this BS get into the limelight?

This.

As for the book and movie in question, I have no interest in either. I'm not interested in anything that romanticizes abusive relationships.

I did read a really hilarious review of the book on Amazon back when there was first a hoopla about it.
