TV & Film 50 Shades of Grey

I thought this book was appalling, and rather glad I'm not the only one who thinks so too. It was written so poorly and the same phrases and adjectives are repeated throughout the book. Didn't it start out as fan fiction for twilight? I'm sure a mate of mine told me that, but he or I might be wrong there.

I agree with the majority here. Didn't read it and don't care to OR see the movie. Some of my co-workers have read it and liked it. A group of them just went to see it and Amy raved about it and said she was going to buy it. :/ I don't know why people want to glorify abuse and promote it. Sad.....

It would be interesting to know why these woman like the film so much.

Omg I work in an office with moatly women, and they were all raving about how great the movie/books were. It bothers me because we care for female patients. One of the docs askwd what it was about, and I said Fan Fiction about how abuse can be sexy. ****** off some peeps who had been raving about it.

Has anybody read Jenny Trout's take down of the book? She goes chapter by chapter and not only lampoons the terrible writing and plot holes, she also does a good job documenting each instance of abuse. And it's damn funny. Jealous Hater Book Club | Trout Nation

I haven't read the books, and I am not going to, but it read through all of her posts. It's worth it.

If you don't have time for all of that, she has a few stand alone posts that address the abuse in the book specifically.

Well, I've seen the book and read the film.

That's a good thing 'cos judging by those who have read the book and seen the film, and liked them, doing either kills brain cells.

You can't argue with sales figures though.

SoG, from what I can glean, is femi-porn in the time honoured Mills & Boon, but on steroids, style.

If you're a shite writer and need to make some bucks then it would seem that femi-porn is the obvious answer.

Everyone at work was reading this when it was new, and they all LOVED it. I haven't read it. I downloaded a copy for free just to see how awful it was and it's terrible. the writing was soo bad. I did the first chapter then quit.

As a book lover can I point out how much it annoys me that the only books that get popular are terrible. There are sooo many amazing authors out there, why does this BS get into the limelight?

Clever marketing? Yet another case of the Emperors New Clothes?

This particular case of 'in the all together ' is altogether the worse example of people being pulled in by media hysteria.

Everyone at work, all my friends were swooning and gasping ..you just HAD to read the book or you were no one.

You could not join in the banter, the nudge nudge and the hilarity of everyone calling their partners Mr Grey . No one mentioned it was actually a rubbish read. No one would dare.

My daughter told me that I would like it because there was an exploration of the psychology of abuse.

So having resisted all the early hysteria I decided like you to dip in...Psychology my arse!!!

Just Mills and Boon with whips. God awful writing style, repetitive dialogue and about as sexy as road kill. I lasted one chapter.

Apparently my friend is arranging a ladies cinema night for the film viewing.

I told her I would rather be dragged naked by a deranged horse down a shingle road until my skin fell away. I think she got it.

I have no interest in reading the book or seeing the movie, mostly for all the reasons cited by others. I loathe bad writing and plot holes you can drive trucks through, so I'll be skipping the book and the movie.

Not only do both the adaptation and the source material glorify an abusive relationship, but the movie is super tame. It doesn't even work as porn, which is hilarious, because that was supposedly the only merit to the books in the first place.
