Every 5 years, the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) publish updated dietary recommendations for Americans. Near the end of this year, the 2020-2025 recommendations will be published. These recommendations are taught to all school children in the United States.

Here are the findings of the Scientific Review Subcommittee - the group of physicians and dietitians who make evidence-based recommendations to the HHS and the USDA: Topics and Questions Under Review | Dietary Guidelines for Americans . The HHS and the USDA are supposed to use these findings when writing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

It's interesting reading. The Scientific Review Subcommittee consistently recommends (1) higher consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, (2) lower or no consumption of red and processed meat, (3) lower consumption of saturated fat (primarily found in animal foods, and in certain tropical nuts), and (4) higher consumption of unsaturated fats (primarily found in nuts and seeds). Most of the recommendations also include increased consumption of legumes and nuts. Seafood and low fat dairy foods are also recommended - the dairy foods recommendation is poor, considering that dairy foods are such a common food allergen: What You Need to Know about Food Allergies.

The current (2015-2020) Dietary Guidelines include specific recommendations and support for vegetarians and vegans: Tips for Vegetarians | ChooseMyPlate . Hopefully, this support will be continued in the 2020-2025 recommendations.
