Welp, that was just about the worst writing decision the show has made. Certainly the worst in a while.
I could go on about how lesbians/women who love women keep getting the short end of the stick in fiction, and how TWD killing off one of its
two lesbian characters is really sketchy, but in the end it comes down to a few facts:
- It made sense for Abraham to die here, especially if it would have left things unresolved with Eugene. They had the perfect setup for this. Then there would have been something sad to come from it at least. As we learned with Lori - if the audience wants a character to die, give it to them, and make them feel like **** for wanting that.
- Denise's comic analogue already has a meaningful, tragic, and noble way of going out. If they were going to kill her off anyway, that would be the greatest payoff. This was just for shock value, which is a cheap death for any character.
- Her death was senseless, which is fair given the nature of the show. However, we have a very pivotal moment coming up which requires a very senseless, tragic, and unfair death to inspire what will be at the very least an entire season's conflict and an entire major character arc tying into the birth of a new civilization. That is going to be a hell of a lot less shocking and certainly less moving if the show goes killing off people for shock value left and right.
Basically: I cannot understate how ****** I am about this, it doesn't make sense on any level, and if I weren't so invested in this show and its characters I'd probably be quitting it right about now.
