The mainstream media suffers from many ills such as the tabloid disease, undeclared bias disease, herd disease and phobia of certain topics.

Fortunately, in this day and age there is a plethora of alternatives for the news-hungry public, so I thought we could share some of the ones we appreciate.

Some random sites off the top of my head:

Snowblog - The blog of Channel4's news anchor Jon Snow
AlJazeera - Although this is in a sense a mainstream news channel in some parts of the world, it doesn't quite have that status in much of the western world. It provides a different perspective compared to the mainstream western channels and covers areas that we don't usually hear about.
Russia Today - Horribly biased and never has a critical word to say about affairs in Russia, but does provide a different perspective and covers some news stories the other media outlets don't care about.

I've heard good things about Democarcy Now!, but I haven't been following it myself yet. Is it worth my time?

It's not online, but I've re-ordered The New Internationalist since they gave me a 3 issues for £1 offer.

From what I remember, they tend to give in-depth coverage to issues across the world with a focus on social injustice and development.

I highly recommend Shirvan's CaspianReport on Youtube which I've been following for a good while now. He covers current events of geopolitical, social and economic natures across the globe in a very objective manner, without any obvious agenda that I can detect. He's got a large number of videos, each usually of around 10 minutes.
