French President Francois Hollande's coif — dark, thinning on top — hasn't really been a subject of conversation, until now. He's facing a scandal after it emerged that he pays a hairdresser nearly $11,000 (9,895 euros) every month.

The scandal, which has been dubbed #CoiffeurGate, was first reported by French satirical and investigative newspaper Le Canard Enchaine. French government spokesman Stephane Le Foll later confirmed the story and "tried to defend his boss," according to The Associated Press.

So is this what socialism means in 2016?

Supposedly, Hollande himself was unaware of the cost of the haircuts. Still ...

I'm assuming he's paying for this personally, that it's not a government expense?

If so, that's his business. And I say that as someone who cuts my own hair because I personally would rather spend the money on the animals in my care.

I'm not sure how a person can be unaware that they're handing over $11,000 at the barbershop.

It sounds as though this hairdresser is someone who is on call 24/7, and is paid a retainer for that. That seems to be the practice for a lot of people in the public eye and/or who are wealthy enough to have those kinds of arrangements.

ETA: I'm now reading that the hairdresser's salary is being paid by the state, which certainly does make it the business of the citizens of France.

Yes, that is correct. Furthermore, nothing much is going to be done about these exorbitant expenses. They just make headlines and than are forgotten.

Champagne socialists, that's what they are. Probably just as removed from the concerns of the common man as the rest of the political establishment.

I wonder if the socialist party will even make it to the final round in the presidential election next year. Hollande's approval ratings are historically low, the lowest ever for a sitting French president:
A 17% approval rating, an average of 18% since January 2014, constitutes unpopularity unprecedented in the history of the Fifth Republic.
