No, I am not pregnant :P

But my future sister-in-law is, and she's coming over this weekend for dinner. I was wondering if there is anything I should avoid cooking that would be bad for the baby. Also, on the opposite end of the scale, is there anything I could make that would be really good for the both of them?

Any help appreciated!

The rules have changed so much from when I was pregnant! The only thing I can think of at the moment is salad. My daughter has been pregnant twice in the last four years and she was told to stay away from salad because of the "raw" aspect and possible bacteria. I'll update as I think of more stuff. :)

That is what I was thinking as you can catch e coli from vegetable and fruit. Raw eggs are a no no, if you're planning on doing a vegetarian meal.
A healthy meal for a preganant woman may be have tofu, bean, brown rice and quinoa with leafy cooked vegetables.

Are you planning on making a vegan or vegetarian meal ?

Vegan :) So obviously most of the pitfall foods (meat, shellfish, eggs, etc) will be avoided anyway.

Yeah, I've heard uncooked foods can be considered 'bad', but some people say it's totally fine as long as you wash everything first (as you should anyway)...

If you're in good health and not pregant, it is fine to consume raw foods. However when preganant you are
more fragile to germs and it could be dangerous for the baby .
It would be better to peel any raw fruit or veg.
Anywayd during this time of the year salads and crudités aren't really on the menu.

Giving this a little bump. The meal is this Sunday, and it's now lunch rather than dinner (which should be a little easier). I'm stuck for menu ideas, though. Future sister-in-law and her husband are both omnis, so I don't want to give them anything that could be seen as 'weird vegan food'. I've come up with some options:

tomato soup, spinach and leek tartlet, pasta with creamy mushroom and asparagus sauce, vegetable pie with chive mash.

Does anyone see any problems with these/have any other ideas?

You're right. 'Weird' vegan food doesn't seem so at lunch time. UK dinners are usually
meat potatoes and vegetables.:D

Have you checked the recipe section as there are quite a few new ones. Vegetable pie with
chive mash sounds good.:lick:

Not too sure about pairing asparagus with mushrooms. I like the idea of pies and tarts with
a winter style salad. Lentil cottage pie ?

I've had a look through the recipe section :) Don't wanna step too far out of the "things I've made before" zone, though, in case it goes horribly wrong and vegan food is forever labelled a disaster :P A cottage pie would be good, I love making those, and they're so tasty! Could make individual ones and serve them with a side of braised veg and some gravy.

The veg pie with mash is the most popular idea with boyfriend so far, though, so we'll probably go with that :) He talked to his sister, and she said there's nothing that makes her nauseous at the moment, so pretty much anything will be fine for her to eat :)

And asparagus and mushrooms go really well together in a garlic and cream sauce - I make that all the time!
