Animal Advocacy Pigeons-Catching & De-Stringing!

I cannot be faffed to rewrite the text in English, as I had to do write a short summary for the French group. So, please don't laugh at the translated version using Deep L. At times, it gets it wrong and changes the meaning of the word.

Yesterday, Monday, a short walk in the heatwave at 31°C, 13,000 steps to feed the birds and also do a bit of string foot (parading).
With the hot weather setting in, there were far fewer pigeons (pidges) as they must be seeking shade in the parks and gardens. The first one that really needed help was near the Apple Store with the group circling the Rotonde. I’ve never seen one with such a long branch stuck in its toes, tangled up in human hair and string. Of course, he was wary and had trouble walking because the others were stepping on the branch and unbalancing him. After a few heart-pounding attempts, the first try was the right one because if I’d missed, he’d have flown off! After having de strung the pidge, they flew away, surely lighter and relieved. I can’t imagine what it was like to fly with such a weight. A conversation with a father and a very young toddler who was happy to see us helping them.

At the courthouse, a few pigeons were hungry, and there I caught two more, one of which was bleeding because the string around its toe was tight and just touching it caused a cut. So, a sterile dressing with pressure and plenty of Betadine. It’s always frightening to see this. Then pigeon No. 100 was caught and de strung. I’m sure they were delighted!! I think even more so when I released them! At Place Bellegarde, they were mostly hungry and nothing else to report.

Back behind the prison, I managed to catch another one – it was tricky because there were people there with their dogs, throwing a ball around (31°C) in this heat! People completely oblivious to the danger! I had a chat with a mother and her two young sons who had initially been chasing the pigeons. I explained the situation and gave them some seeds so the children could feed the birds instead of scaring them. The woman was very understanding and said she would go and buy some seeds. Another mother also told her son off for scaring them when I asked him not to. It’s nice to see responsible parents teaching their children that you can’t just do whatever you like! She hadn’t realised the pigeons were so scared! Picked up lots of bits of string and twine on the Cours.

A quick pop into Land & Moneys for a much-needed break. There are loads of pigeons flying into the café but they’re immediately escorted out by Quentin! It’s going to be tricky this summer to do stringfoot work outside of the early morning. I went back to the bus station as there were two pigeons with injured feet, but only three with healthy feet. The security guard filled my flask with fresh water and said he knew who I was because he’d seen me on the benches feeding and treating them. He continued the conversation by saying that the day humans disappear from the planet, it will be better for the animals and nature.

Four pigeons have been de strung, including our 100th.

That makes a total of 102.

The very first pidge of the day. They were at the main square in front of Apple store and very skittish. They were struggling to walk as the branch that was attached to their toes was more than twice the size of the pidge. Moreover, it was mainly human hair that was attached to both, so I can only imagine the pain that the pidge had when they were flying. Human hair cuts into their delicate skin.

There must have also been an issue getting in and out of the nest to feed their squabs. They could have died as a result of the branch as it could have easily gotten stuck on a tree or rther, making the pidge a prisoner.

Here they are! Pidge Number 100! They look thrilled and it's strange that they seemed happy to escape when I released this very
special bird!
