New, Graphic Anti-Smoking Campaign

I don't know why more people don't switch to ecigarettes.

I keep thinking about getting an ecigarette and I haven't smoked in ten years, but I thought it might be fun...nicotine addiction isn't much fun though.

As a 25-30 a day smoker I'm mixed on this so I'll stick with the one aspect that amuses me.

Ever an omni does the 'filthy habit' routine on me ...

"You don't see it as filthy to burn dead bodies but you do see it as filthy to burn dead leaves???"

My sister is a smoker. She has been suffering from a blood clot in her leg for two months now. Meds are not helping and she has considerable pain. My mom had a stroke in her early fifties and her mom (our grandmother) died from complications of a stroke in her late forties. I wish my sister could quit. :(

^Im sorry to hear about your sister : (

I don't know why more people don't switch to ecigarettes.

My Dad gave up smoking after 40+ years (and multiple quit attempts) by using ecigarettes. He hasnt had one since April and I am sooo proud of him. Apparently the trick is to try several types til you find one you like, and order online rather than buying the crap they sell in shops (the only half decent one in shops is the nicorette one i hear. my dads made me try all his and they all seem the same to me, but i am a non smoker). My Aunt then followed and did the same. So yay to ecigarettes! I dont smoke and have never smoked, but I'd rather people use ecigs than smoke. Its a shame people are trying scare tactics against them, "theyre not tested properly". Hmmm so would I rather my father breathe in vapour that may have a slim chance of causing issues, or have him smoke something that definately causes cancer/heart disease/stroke/etc? Hard one.

As for the ad, I ofter wonder how much research these companies do (other than shown in the vid). Do these ads work at all? Ive never known a smoker to give up from an ad campaign. And as for strokes - its well known that smokers have a high chance of cancer, so that is OK but they wouldnt want a stroke? eh? I think the best strategy would be able to highlight how expensive it is haha. I know many people who have serious health issues but still smoke - for example a colleague at work keeps having time off due to bronchitis but still smokes. And KL52's sister is another example. My great aunt had such bad lungs she had an oxygen tank next to her bed but she smoked 40 a day! (then died of cancer). If they can't/wont give up I doubt a video will have any effect. Addiction is stronger than a video.

this post was way too long. oops!

They have ones without nicotine; some people still like to smoke them after they are off the nicotine. They have different flavors, too.

that sounds nice...I wouldn't want to get addicted to nicotine again.

partly it was the act of smoking that I liked anyway.

I hope your sister quits KLS. Does she have any desire to quit?

^This times a million. We had some similar very graphic and disturbing ads shown here. They usually aired right around dinner time. Never stopped me from lighting up when I smoked. I did eventually quit but it had nothing to do with the graphic commercials and ads.

Yeah I wonder the same thing, I find it hard to believe it has any effect. When I smoked it only had the big words "SMOKING KILLS" kind of thing, it never bothered me at all, most people just made light of it.

I smoked for a few years on and off, and I can't say I ever consciously thought about the 'smoking kills' message on any of the tobacco products; that sort of thing just becomes part of the packaging. Not sure about the pictures of disease. We didn't have that 12 years ago.

''The government estimates that around 365 000 people will attempt to quit as a result of the campaign.''

I believe that it would be more helpful to prevent people from lighing up their first cigarette.

The goverment should carry out more prevention programs at schools and youth centres.

I sometimes think I might have been helped by smoking cigarettes when I was a teenager. It might have helped me overcome being shy, having something to focus on, and having a stress relieving drug in me, in social situations.....I took up smoking too late maybe.

Same here. We all think we are invisible. We all have the attitude "Oh it won't happen to me"

I agree with both of these statements.

I found it easier to give up cold turkey but then I was never a heavy smoker, it was more of a stupid habit when I had been drinking.:p

Cold turkey worked best for me too. I was a pack a day smoker though.

Smoking is looked down upon here. I always felt ostracized in social situations when I smoked. I always had to go off somewhere outside by myself to smoke because nobody wants to be around a smoker.

I was talking to someone at work today who took that anti smoking drug they do on the NHS (Champix). Apparently it worked well, but what she told me sounded scary. I thought they'd taken it off the market but apparently not!

Somewhere in her head I'm sure she wants to quit, but it doesn't seem like she really wants to. She actually quit for four years (years ago) and then went back. I don't get that. I also know people who stop smoking during pregnancy and then light up right after the baby is born.

As a never-smoked person, it's hard for me to grasp it. I know it has to be really hard to quit. I'm so glad I never started. It's hard enough for me with sugar and junk food. I know smoking is way more addictive.

That's a shame. :(

There's no way I could afford to go back to smoking now. The prices are insane. I know when you have an addiction money isn't that much of a deterrent. Somehow, someway you find the money.

perhaps people go back to smoking at times of stress.

Yep. It's easier to revert to an old familiar coping mechanism then adapt to a new healthy one.
