There are a lot of people out there who have suffered a loss, whether the person died tragically or not. They want to believe because they are grieving that loss and wish they could have their loved one back. And since we know grief takes many forms, it's not always the loud wailing obvious type of grief. As the article points out, so-called mediums and psychics like Theresa Caputo prey on those who are vulnerable, who are in mourning.
And $800 for a private reading? Holy ****!
I feel that people who are unable to move on from the loss of a loved one should see a therapist, not a "medium." That $800 could be better spent on somebody with a Ph.D or M.D. who can help the bereaved better than somebody just out to take their money.
I do watch her show, for the same reason I used to watch TV evangelists back when I had more fortitude for such things.: Sick fascination, as my Spanish professor once said. They have cameras rolling a lot, but I'm sure that the show is heavily edited to show a lot of positive outcomes, people who are receptive to her "readings", people who say they are no longer skeptics. I notice that, like Theresa herself, there are a lot of Catholics featured, especially Italian-Americans, like Theresa. She uses a lot of Catholic imagery (saints, angels, etc.) and her beliefs are standard Catholic teachings. (She has a book out and I read some of it in the store.) She also does a lot of "readings" of African-Americans and Hispanics, who also tend to be very religious and receptive to what she says.
