Lactic acid

Sorry if this has been done to death but I don't think my search function is working on my phone.
As far as I can see, lactic acid does not come from milk. But is it still from animals? Iv read different things, some say yes it's from animals, others say it's factory made.
I guess the only safe way to know is to email the company. Was just wondering if anyone could clear it up before I so do please?

I think it can be extracted from milk, or it can be made artificially.......I emailed a company about one product, and they said that the lactic acid in their product was vegan....
I have been wondering about olives that often come in lactic acid.

I've always understood lactic acid to be a product of fermentation, and in commercial applications, derived from bacteria.

I looked on an app I have that says whether it's animal derived or vegan and it said sometimes either :-(

I think it can sometimes be made by fermenting milk. But with prices up for dairy products such as whey protein and cheese, it's probably cheaper to make with bacteria.
