Okay, so I never really caught on to the whole Johnny Cash thing while he was alive. Oh, I saw him act in a couple of TV series like Columbo, but never had any interest in seeking out his music. It wasn't until I saw Walk the Line, the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic - when it turned up on TV, not in the theater - that I started to get interested in his music. At some point after that, I was browsing in a used media store, found a copy of his Live at Folsom Prison CD, and bought it. I put it aside and never bothered to listen to it until this past year.

And now suddenly I'm VERY interested in more of his music and decided to buy some more of it, studio recordings, mainly his best known stuff. I went to Amazon and found a box set of his Columbia recordings, every single one, 59 records, for over $200 just on Amazon. There's no way I can afford this, so I thought I'd start out small and just buy a couple of CDS.

Problem is, I don't know which ones to get. Should I just get a "Hits" or "Best of" album? These types of albums are notorious for often not including songs that should be included.

Does anyone reading this know anything about Johnny Cash's music?

Gotta love the man in black.

His covers are pretty good - I have to like his version of the NIN song better than the original.

American 3 covers some of my favorite artists - Bonnie Prince Billy, Nick Cave, and Tom Petty.

Possibly my very favorite:

You need to listen to the Bonnie Prince Billy album that's from. It's a great album about depression. "Black" is one of the best - it's about accepting depression as a part of one's life.

I'm partial to Folsom Prison. There's a little cafe that had open music night on Fridays a few years ago. It was directly across from a railroad. A bunch of us would grab our guitars and go there and play. One guy was really good. Many times, while he was playing Folsom Prison, the train would go by and blow the whistle. It was cool.

I sang Folsom Prison Blues on the one and only time I've done karaoke. I killed it.

In a good way.

Haha awesome! Would have liked to see that. :)

I do too. I've learned about some great music through all these youngsters on the web. ;)

The youtube suggest is also pretty good.

But I really try to buy the band's music if I enjoy them. A lot of the bands I like are minor bands who don't make a lot of money.
