Life Sciences CRISPR/CAS9 - Breakthrough in Gene editing, explained

So many options! It's a brave new world!
Maybe we could edit our genes so that we are less susceptible to disease? Remove hereditary diseases? Various syndromes? Raise our intellectual capacity?

Sounds to me like they have a long way to go yet. I’ll pass for now.

That's the idea. Interestingly enough, biologists using this system to edit genes found out that once the defective "chunk" of genetic material is removed, the body starts to repair the DNA itself! I thought that was pretty neat. Genes often have synergistic effects, so while repairing one faulty gene may cure disease Y, we don't know if performing the repair leads to the development of disease X. So (as with all new tech), proceed with caution!!
