So I went to my local cafe and bought a bagel per usual. They told me the bagels were vegan a while ago, but it just occurred to me…do plain bagels that are vegan use an egg wash? There is sadly not a lot I can eat there with the exception of oatmeal and their bagels. Is it safe to consume?

Also…I’m worrying about the bone char issue with sugar as well. I’m trying to not stress about it and focus on how hard I’m trying. However, I still feel guilty consuming torani syrups in my lattes and their smoothie mix when I buy a smoothie at the cafe in my local grocery store.

I've been told by people here that I may not be "vegan enough".

so take this with a grain of salt. but my personal philosophy is not to sweat the small stuff. And above my desk is my personal motto. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

There are no awards for being a perfect vegan. it doesn't do much for your personal health and any benefit to animals is minor (maybe even non-existent).

you might just make yourself crazy anxious or neurotic.

And IMHO the worst thing is that the message you send to the non-vegans. Than being vegan is difficult.

That being said I don't buy bagels sandwiches or lattes or smoothies in shops. it's just so much cheaper to make them at home. and then I can be sure of the ingredients. By the way, another reason I make my bagel sandwiches at home is I don't think a bagel sandwich without cream cream cheese is worth the money. and I keep a tub of vegan cream cheese at home.

and although you didn't ask - I can't see buying oatmeal in a shop. its way more expensive than making it at home.

Now there are times you are with acquaintances and you want to eat a meal with company. In those cases, I just order whatever is the most likely vegan thing on the menu. Appearing to be a "fussy vegan" could do more harm to our image. With my friends it doesn't matter - they know why I'm vegan.

not to long ago I met a bunch of people for the first time for breakfast and the only thing I could get was the oatmeal and you know it was one of the best bowls of oatmeal I ever had. - so almost worth the $7 I spent on it. And way better for me than the breakfast "they" ordered which includes things like eggs and sausages. (And for at least twice the price)
