Following months of feverish speculation, Star Wars Episode 7 has announced its cast, with Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley and more joining original actors Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill who will all reprise their roles.

The casting news was posted on Star Wars official site, presumably before it leaked via a script read through JJ Abrams held in London today (Ford and Hamill had already been spotted around town).

The new arrivals are:

How do you feel about these new Star Wars movies being made? Do you think they'll be any better than the previous three movies (episodes 1, 2, 3)?

I guess it can be a bit exciting. But I don't think they would be anything near the original ones. I'm not a huge fan of episode 1-3 (I think special the first one is quite boring). Not all thing gets better just because the effects are better now.

Truer words were never spoken. (Or typed, as is the case here.)

I think episodes 1-3 were as enjoyable as one could hope for in a movie that doesn't even have zombies. As long as there are some cool light sabre scenes and some planets getting blown up I'll be satisfied.

Does anyone have any guesses regarding the story?

I wonder if Luke will turn to the Dark Side somehow. He got his hand cut off in The Empire Strikes Back, so he gets a prosthetic replacement, which makes him more machine, less human, just like his father ...

I really enjoyed the original Star Wars movies. I think the new ones will be fun and look forward to seeing them sometime. I don't go to movies in the theater very often so will have to wait a while. :D

I was wondering when you'd start a thread about this! I was going to, but figured you must have done it already and I had missed it.

I'm wondering about all the books that have come out which take place after the events of Episode 6. I think I heard that the books would be considered fan-fiction, or non-canon, or something. But a lot has gone on in the books:
Han marries Leia and they have kids; Luke marries Mara Jade and they have at least one child also; Chewbacca gets killed off; the Yuzhan Vong (sp?) invasion...

I think the good guys should get a death star this time....why should you have to turn to the dark side to get a death star?
I once saw a signature someone had on a message board: "Come to the Dark Side. We have cookies."

I haven't read a lot of the "unofficial" / fan fiction / non-canon books about the time after episode 6, just one that I remember, though I have read some of the comics. This was a long time ago though, so unfortunately I don't remember a lot of it ... There was something about a war between two alien races, one that looked like "Goths" (the contemporary kind) and one that looked like Afghan mujahedins... And there was a story where Luke got sick with some kind of hallucinatory fever...

I hadn't realised that someone had been inside R2 D2. Kenny Baker, I read; and he is in going to be in the new movie. Surely nobody need to be in R2 D2?

This being 2014, I'm guessing at least one established character will be outed as gay.

Optimistic. But with this being JJ Abrams, I'm guessing that no such thing will happen and at least one female costar will appear in a gratuitously skimpy outfit in a demeaning context with no such parallel scene for the male costars.

Abrams has the cast - hell, Lupita Nyong'o is supposed to be in the film - to make this much more reasonably diverse than the new Star Trek movies. Here's to hoping he doesn't screw it up, and your optimism isn't misplaced.
