Earlier this week, Safaa Hegazy, the director of state-run Egyptian radio and television, barred eight anchorwomen from appearing on the air for a month, saying they were overweight, the state-owned Al-Ahram news website confirmed. Ms. Hegazy ordered the women to go on a diet during their suspensions, Al-Ahram said.

(there's an American joke here somewhere ... nice to know Berlusconi's news ethics have reached Egypt)

I don't think that it's by accident that female on-air staff at almost all of the U.S. news channels are uniformly thin (and on some channels, wearing extraordinary amounts of makeup, short skirts and 5 inch heels).

Someone in my family made the same remark ; the ladies on US news all look like gorgeous models.

I guess in the US Ms. Khatab would have been replaced by another presenter, no special explanation given...

Yup. The only place someone of her weight *might* stand a chance is on public television, which is more intellect and less looks oriented.

Same down here Mischief , its just the same" standard "as Egypt but more covert .

I love Michelle Charlesworth. She's so pretty and not stick thin.

My understanding is that the position of anchorman / anchorwoman is likely highly contested, and networks likely compete on the likability of their anchorpeople. Let's face it, it is the same for movies ... movies with attractive / interesting stars have better chances of being watched...
