I've been excited about kites from a young age. Below is a photo of me (about 1980, age 10 or 11) with one of my first successful homemade kites.

I've made other types of kites, too - box kites, serpent kites, and kite styles from China, Korea, and Bermuda. I like the simpler styles, though, because you can make them pretty quickly.

It's cool that a thing made from sticks and paper can fly hundreds or thousands of feet in the air. Kites are tethered aircraft, and people have been making them for at least 2,500 years.

When you fly a kite at a park or schoolyard, something neat happens. Local kids and parents see the kite, and they start bringing out their kites, too. Pretty soon, there are 2 or 4 colorful kites in the air. It brings people outdoors.

I like to sit and read while the kite is flying. I wrap the string around my foot, so that I can enjoy the pull of the kite.
