We’ve suffered 27 years of state terror, Chinese mothers of Tiananmen victims say ahead of anniversary

Families have endured constant harassment and intimidation by security services for pursuing justice for loved ones, letter says.

Mothers of some of those killed in China’s crackdown on the 1989 pro-democracy movement say they have lived through 27 years of state-led “terror and suffocation” and vow to continue pushing for the truth ahead of this weekend’s anniversary of the events.

An open letter signed by 131 members of the Tiananmen Mothers and published by the overseas advocacy group Human Rights in China said victims’ families had endured constant harassment and intimidation by security services for pursuing justice for their loved ones.

China reins in move to remember Tiananmen incident
Chinese authorities are tightening security in Beijing on the 27th anniversary of a violent crackdown on pro-democracy protests.

The Tiananmen Square incident occurred on the night of June 4th, 1989, when China's military opened fire on crowds of students and civilians gathered at the site.

On Saturday, police officers could be seen deployed everywhere in the square and areas around it.

Police at a major intersection were stopping cars and checking inside them. The entrance to a subway station, where many people are believed to have been wounded or died, was closed.

The government says 319 people died in the incident.
But actual casualties are believed to be much higher.
Some families of victims are demanding the authorities tell the truth.

The government maintains it dealt correctly with the incident. It is clamping down on people who try to commemorate the incident or criticize officials. The surveillance of bereaved families has been stepped up. Sources say public security authorities are monitoring some families and pro-democracy activists to keep them from going out.
