THE badger cull in Gloucestershire could be halted after a legal challenge from a charity.

An eight-week extension to the cull was requested after a failure to kill the minimum number of badgers during a six-week pilot aimed at curbing bovine TB.

In a letter, the Badger Trust said it would be “unlawful” for Natural England “to grant a further licence”.

In total 708 badgers have been killed in the county, 942 fewer than the target of 1,650.

It saddens me to read that 708 have been murdered legally and hundreds of others have/are being gassed by farmers.

It's soley the 'need' for dead cows that creates the 'need' for dead badgers.

The Badger Trust said it was asking Natural England to consider their letter when looking at the application to "grant a fresh licence" to shoot badgers in Gloucestershire.

The letter used quotes from original statements from ministers and officials who the trust said had talked of the cull having "a maximum period of six weeks".

The trust said it believed the cull had "met its purpose in testing the 'effectiveness' and had shown it not to be effective".

The badger cull in Gloucestershire is to be called off.

The controversial plan to cull badgers to try and reduce bovine TB will finish at noon tomorrow.

Natural England will revoke the culling licence for marksmen, which was extended to December 18, as they have failed to kill enough badgers.

I really don't know whether to rejoice or not as there is so much conflicting information circulating. When the culls stop, the farmers are illegally gassing the poor mites. Nobody wins in the end.
