Apparently the human scent on the calf was the reason it was rejected by its herd, and it would have starved to death without its mother. That's why it was euthanized.
 
I don't understand why in the world it was euthanized. I'm sure there are rescue groups with experience nursing calves. How hard could it be to raise a calf? For crying out loud, hardly any cow calves in the US get to nurse anymore - those are all bottle fed soy milk so Mom's milk can go to humans. This is just insane from every angle.
