Music What bands / concerts have you seen lately?

Amanda Palmer in Birmingham last night. Totally amazing. Strong contender for gig of the year. It was a small venue so I was up close and personal and she did plenty of crowd surfing.

And I got a set list! :D

I saw Alice In Chains in Milwaukee on Tuesday. As usual, they rocked...hard! I am going again in a week and a half. :)

I got to see Weird Al Yankovic perform at Foxwoods Casino on Friday night. I saw him once before back in 1996 when I was 9 years old. He was touring for his Alapalooza album and did a show at Eastern States Exposition (The Big E), a state fair in Massachusetts. I remember being awed by not just the musical performance itself but all the costumes and everything that went along with the parodies, and the encore performance of Yoda, complete with accordion solo.

This time around, the purpose of the tour is to showcase his original songs that don't often get performed during normal album tours. The tour is no frills, meaning no costumes, video screens or special effects. It sounds lackluster but it was anything but. It was a reminder how talented and versatile the band members are as musicians. He performed some of my favorite tracks and even did some of them in a different genre/style than the originals. It was well worth the ticket.

For those who are curious. Here is the setlist:
“Weird Al” Yankovic Setlist at Fox Theater at Foxwoods, Mashantucket

You will note some of the songs on the setlist had not been performed live in about 30 years, so that made it all the more special. My mum and my brother were at that 1996 show with me, and the 3 of us got to share this experience too. So that was an added bonus. If he does another tour in the future in more of his usual style, I would definitely see him again.

I went to see Fastloaders and three other retro game musicians/composers at the Back In Time mini-festival in Bergen last month, so thought I should share a picture since I so rarely go to any concerts/festivals. Here is Fastloaders on stage with Reyn Ouwehand, the legendary composer of the Last Ninja 3 music.

In the past two weeks, I have seen Nine Inch Nails, Metallica and Machine Head (twice this week!). Tomorrow, I am going to Metal Fest in Rhode Island to see Jinjer, Devildriver and Whitechapel.

My brother just got some pre-sale tickets for Weird Al's latest tour called Strings Attached, where he will be touring with an orchestra. The show is at a small-ish venue near me this coming July. We have seats in the center section about a dozen rows back from the stage. My brother tried to get seats even closer but he was about ten minutes late when the presale opened online and already the best seats were going fast! Still... not going to complain. The previous tour was great but we were literally in the very back row.

I saw Steve Wilson in November. As always, he never disappoints. He played a mix of solo stuff and Porcupine Tree material, including one of my all-time favorites: Heart Attack in a Layby. Also, I'd mistakenly bought a VIP ticket, so before the show the VIPers got a three-song acoustic set and some fun banter.

I got tickets to see the British band Muse in the summer, they were expensive!

I've gone/ am going to 4 gigs this year so far.:)

Wow, that is a lot of bands. I keep listening to a live version of Came Back Haunted on YouTube.:apple:

That was such a fun stretch for me, especially needed because I'd just been laid off from my job. Live music is my drug of choice. :D

Way cool on the four gigs! And Came Back Haunted is awesome. I so love Trent.

My concert schedule is much reduced so far this year with no work, but I'm still managing to get live music through some local bands and gifts from friends and family. I've seen Steve Smith & the Nakeds (they do classic rock and blues along with some original music, and they have a four-piece brass section that just rocks!) three times in the past couple of months, James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt (they were outstanding!) earlier this month, and in July I'm going to see a Led Zeppelin tribute band with two sisters. I also splurged on Alice In Chains tickets for August. They are in my top 10 favorite bands, and I just cannot pass them up when they tour. I'm going with a nephew and my sister. They are worth skipping grocery shopping for a week, haha. If I were working, I'd have splurged on the recently announced Metallica S&M concert (San Francisco symphony and Metallica together!). They did this a couple of decades ago, and it was stunning (I own only the DVD and CD; I never got to go). The concerts are in California, so it would require spending quite a bit on travel, but oh, how I would LOVE to see that performance. Metallica with an orchestra is just phenomenal. I'm hoping they announce something similar for New York. That I would splurge on!

I got tickets to see André Rieu next year.:woo:I've wanted to see him for a while.

Oh, that's fantastic! I took my mother to see him years ago in Boston for her birthday. It was a wonderful show. He is such a great entertainer. People were waltzing in the aisles. You will love it!

I saw The Architects, a British heavy metal band, in Brooklyn last week. They were rockin'!! I had another opportunity to see them closer to home, but I exercised fiscal restraint given my current work situation, haha. I would go see them again for sure.
