Hi,
Before i went vegan i used to really love salmon. I know lots of substitutes for smoked salmon, but is there any baked/grilled vegan salmon substitute?

Please don't judge my english, I'm not a native english speaker.

I don't see how grilled papaya tastes anything like salmon. :worried:

I think that one just has to accept that some foods cannot be duplicated to taste anything like the real thing.
Well, it has been marinated in kelp and dulse, it has a faux skin from nori, and it's seasoned etc. But I'm sure it's not like real salmon. I've seen some specialist vegan products that imitates grilled salmon / salmon fillets, and I'm thinking these are probably closer to the original. However, I've not seen any of these available in Europe. (There are some vegan smoked salmon products, but I haven't found baked/grilled.)

Right. :)

i once made a hummus or cannelini bean paste with semi dried tomtoes, it was great on a bagel and strangely salmon like for some odd reason...

Personally, I think that's a good thing, because I think the taste and smell of real salmon is nasty. I was only able to stomach it when I was a meat-eater if I added copious amounts of mayo. (This was smoked salmon.)

Smoked and fresh salmon are so very different and difficult to compare.

I just think it's a shame to call grilled fruit vegan salmon. :) It gives vegan food a bad reputation. Why not just call it spicy grilled papaya ?

We also can't really compare what is tasty or not as it's due to our taste buds.

Sokeye Salmon is surely one of those foods that I really miss and it is impossible to duplicate.

When I first saw the title, I thought perhaps someone was advocating for salmon to change their diets. jk ;)

Anyhow, growing up on the coast, I was raised on seafood, salmon included. When I went vegan, it wasn't meat that I missed; it was seafood, mainly. While I haven't tried papaya, I have tried bell peppers, beets, and carrots to mimic sushi style salmon. It was tasty, but nothing like real salmon.

I feel you could probably get the texture pretty close with various recipes, but in my humble opinion, you won't reproduce salmon flavour with nori and bay seasoning. I've even tried smoking the carrot strips, in hopes it would have a lox like taste. Smoked carrots anyone?

I also agree with shyvas. Salmon alone is hard enough to mimic, but Sockeye, aside from the bright red colour, would be impossible to reproduce with a veggie or fruit. Maybe some company like Beyond could come closer, but that is yet to be seen.

I can't remember what salmon tastes like. I thought the texture reminded me of eating skin. :yuck: I used to like tuna, it was one of the last things I gave up before I went veggie.

I just watched a YouTube video about a vegan cafe called Dirty Vegans in Boscombe, Bournemouth in England that does very realistic vegan seafood. They have just brought out a vegan salmon alternative. The couple who ate there were raving about how good it was.
