"Both cats and dogs may thrive on vegetarian diets, but these must be nutritionally complete and reasonably balanced. Owners should also regularly monitor urinary acidity, and should correct urinary alkalinisation through appropriate dietary additives, if necessary."

"a significant and growing body of population studies and case reports have indicated that cats and dogs maintained on vegetarian diets may be healthy—including those exercising at the highest levels—and, indeed, may experience a range of health benefits."

one good study example..." Study by Brown et al. (2009) It is difficult to envision any companion animals placed under greater physical demands than sprint-racing Siberian Huskies. During sprint races, these dogs run fast through snow, while hauling sleds, for much of the 30-mile race duration . In 2009, Brown and colleagues reported the results of a study of 12 sprint-racing Siberian Huskies fed either a commercial diet recommended for active dogs (n = 6), or a meat-free diet formulated to the same nutrient specifications (n = 6). The commercial diet contained 43% poultry meal, which was replaced by maize gluten and soybean meal in the meat-free diet. The dogs were fed these diets for 16 weeks, which included 10 weeks of competitive racing. Health checks were conducted by a veterinarian blinded to the dietary regimens. All dogs were assessed as being in excellent physical condition, and none developed anaemia or other detectable health problems."

they were reported as being hostile and inadequate for vegan nutrition tests...https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5035952/ "In one case (Wysong), the company admitted that its product was unlikely to be nutritionally complete: “Wysong does not advocate the singular feeding of VeganTM to carnivores such as dogs and cats. … It is designed for intermittent feeding or as a base to add different meats for sensitivities and allergies”. They further asserted their philosophical opposition to the concept of attempting to produce a single, nutritionally complete diet: “Complete knowledge of nutrition does not exist … and therefore “completeness” is misleading. … With that in mind, Wysong seeks to formulate and educate for optimal, not “adequate” nutrition and encourages pet owners to rotate, vary, and enhance the diet”."

There are more that produce Vegan petfood..most major Petfood suppliers like Royal Canin have vegan products for the dogs/cats who get sick on the animal content kibbles etc. Seems clear when dogs etc get kidney and allergy health problems...the solution is not flesh but more plant nutrition elements. Halo and Yarrah are other brands doing Vegan petfood but not 100 percent vegan companies as they produce non vegan petfoods also.

ALL cats vegan or on vegan can get urinary UTI stones and/or bleeding. This is a feline species genetic weakness.

Cats and dogs can have monthly (for cats) or occasionaly or dogs URINE TESTS using a simple paper available on ebay to check acidity/alkaline content of urine. Vegan urine tends to be less acidic than non vegan Not a negative unless an issue presents itself like excess urinating indicating need to alter diet slightly.. there are also paper testers for cat kidney problems. Here is one link...https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/50-x-Pet-Urine-Test-Strips-Veterinary-Animal-Vet-Cats-Dogs-One-Step-/282176503218

Cat Grass is useful for cats also or digestion clearance needs. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BARLEY-G...hash=item28186f7f55:m:mBIGxugH6-FSRPT-fP4Bw8g

.................................................................................................................

http://vegan-information.com/vegan_...otein_fat_minerals_percentages_and_names.docx list of dec 2017 available vegan petfoods and utritional content analysis. This has pictures o ALL the known 100 percent vegan company petfoods available as at end of 2017 in the world. The main 5 main vegan petfood suppliers. It has the NUTRITIONAL DETAILS OF CONTENT of PROTEIN FATS AND VITAMINS and MINERALS CONTENTS as well as the SOURCE of the protein and main ingredient be it Potatoes, Maize, Rice, Soy (human grade) Wheat (rare) Grain Free.

PRICES also as at end of 2017 excluding postage.

Feeding Commercial kibble per large dog per month 25 GBP/EUR/USD including postage costs.

Feeding home made, plus supplements of vegedog/vegecat/vegepup/vegekit per large dog per month 12 GBP/EUR/USD per month.

Postage of local distributors tends to be approximately 6GBP/EUR/USD per 15kg for the largest pack of kibble and supplements that last 2 months for a medium sized active dog.

Therefore the price of say Benevo Organic GMO free non wheat content kibble is around 50 GBP/EUR/USD including postage for 1 large 15kg pack.

Supplements cost for say 1KG of yeast about 10 GBP/USD/EUR and last several months or 1 dog or cat. Vegedpg/vegepup/vegecat/vegekit small bottles of powder supplements also cost similar. 10 USD/EUR.GBP cost per month per large dog of supplements.

Due to weight and cost efficiencies...it is sensible to order a small bulk supply of minimum 2 packs to 30kg the limit for the GBP/EUR/USD postage standard cost. Delivery is usually within 2 days.

The postage costs of international orders, not local on ebay or elsewhere, can mean ordering from abroad increases the transport / shipping costs to approximately the same as the cost of the items bought. I ordered 6 months supplies of supplements for 2 large dogs and 1 kitten and the items cost me 132 GBP/EUR/USD plus postage/shipping costs of 70 GBP/USD/EUR approximately to give an idea as I am in the UK(Europe before Brexit extra costs) importing from the USA. I may find these items on ebay locally in future or find a cheaper way or buying. It is still not too expensive or home made cheaper than commercial vegan petfood. 10 GBP/EUR/USD per animal per month costs even at that high postage/shipping cost.

When ordering BULK KIBBLE commercial petfood...inform the supplier this is bulk buy to ensure the batch expiry life of average 8 months for most kibbles is ensured and not old batch stock shipped out. Calculate the cost effectiveness of the shipping/postage costs also. I found ordering 2 packs of 15kg at a time the most cost effective for UK local supplies. This will vary depending on where ordered from of course.

Hi, See the Vegan Dogs Thriving facebook page. There is info about urinary alkalisation on the profile photo there (it can lead to painful urinary crystals, meaning the animal might not be able to urinate. Signs may include dripping urine, vigourously self-cleaning and a hot abdomen). Alongside keeping to high plant protein (fruits and veggies balanced or kept to a mininum, VegeYeast Supplement is very helpful due to it being very acidic, or the version for cats.
By the way, a thumbs up emoji (instead of the face) would be good for the links :)

just saw this now...i buy ready made mostly...not good at cooking but use vegeyeast for dogs and cats when i do. test urine with strips regularly never any issues. the cat species generally has a genetic weakness with crystals additionally no matter what diet it is fed...wild lions etc suffer bigtime from uti and kidney health problems. drinking water quality is also an overlooked matter that affects this too so i use a drinkwell filtered water fountain and filtered water anyway. oh the face things i do not know how they appeared i copy pasted from the webpage blog i have of that info....that does not have those emoj faces lol i agree they look odd but would take too long to edit out. this is where i had pasted from...http://vegan-information.com/Vegan_Dogs_and_Cats.html no face emojs on the page lol. strange things happen with copy paste obviously.

Vegecat™ or Vegecat phi™? http://mail.vegepet.com/vegetarian_cats/vegecat_kibblemix.html
Most adult cats thrive on Vegecat™. Furthermore, Vegecat™ is the preferred product for older cats with weaker kidneys, unless they have a known urinary issue, in which case Vegecat phi™ would be a better option.

Vegecat KibbleMix™ Ingredients

Studies from 1971-82 indicated that 90-97% of all uroliths are struvite, a calculus composed of magnesium and ammonium phosphate bonded with water. By 1986 this figure had dropped to 82%, primarily because of more acidic diets containing less magnesium.

NOT RECOMMENDED COMPANY...due to quality issues AND anti vegan statements made...untrustable ingredients therefore..Wysong

they were reported as being hostile and inadequate for vegan nutrition tests...https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5035952/ "In one case (Wysong), the company admitted that its product was unlikely to be nutritionally complete: “Wysong does not advocate the singular feeding of VeganTM to carnivores such as dogs and cats.

KITTENS...Commercial kitten vegan food only available from EVOLUTION in the USA. NOT available in Europe as at 2017...ONLY SOLUTION FOR KITTENS IS THEREFORE TO do HOME MADE food with VEGEKIT supplement.

Vegan urine tends to be less acidic than non vegan Not a negative unless an issue presents itself like excess urinating indicating need to alter diet slightly.. there are also paper testers for cat kidney problems. http://vegan-information.com/vegan_...otein_fat_minerals_percentages_and_names.docx list of dec 2017 available vegan petfoods and utritional content analysis.

Excellent blood test by vet of 2.5 year old vegan indoor cat. No excuse for animal abuse of breeding and killing for preferred pet toyIMG_20200207_134231.jpgIMG_20200207_134231.jpgIMG_20200207_134250.jpg

People need to realise that pet foods are regulated by government authorities.

Like all food sold to the public..there are laws about labelling and quality standards that foods have to comply with ...be they human or non human designated foods

Digestion...species appropriate...nutrients quantities...are all criteria that are in pet food standards by law needing to be met.

It is illegal...to put on labels for example "taurine" unless it has been measured, quantified...and therefore NO raw cat foods bought will ever have the word "taurine" on their labels as it is not possible to quantify if there is any taurine in the sold product...taurine is destroyed fast once an animal dies and by freezing water run offs cooking etc.

Any mention of the nutrient "taurine " on pet food labels means it is synthetic so vegan in ALL commercial cat foods.

This is something many people just are plain ignorant about...but when understood...it is clear...anyone claiming taurine is only available in "meat" meaning bred and killed by humans animals...is totally wrong...in all commercial pet foods where taurine is mentioned on the labels...it is totally synthetic so vegan.

In the USA...pet foods are controlled by the FDA...in Europe...it is the FEDIAF organisations.

In addition...the standard setters in the USA are AAFCO who list in great detail exactly what nutrients in what quantities any pet foods sold to the public need to provide at all life stages.

These details are easily visible by a google search for AAFCO i add. And i am sure I provide a link to them in my post done specifically on vegan pet foods mentioned above...the link i provide again...

So it is actually not sensible to tell people that they need to speak to their vets to get any approval for what they feed their pets...no one needs to do that...people need to know about the pet food standards set by AAFCO and check whatever pet food they buy is compliant or not with those standards in the labels and descriptions of contents.

I did review the vegan pet foods...and in particular EVOLUTION of the USA who have been selling vegan pet foods for dogs and cats for over 30 years....are ABOVE AAFCO standards ...so this is very clear and reassuring.

Vets...who earn from selling specific pet foods...as many do...are NOT therefore independant persons to take advice from about what pet foods to feed pets. For obvious reasons...no one who is earning from specific brands is independant on this matter so the buyer needs to be aware of this and make their own decisions.

I could welcome a system where no vets were allowed to sell or make money from pet foods...that then would make them independant ...until that day...their views on pet foods are not valid for obvious reasons.

Summary of reasons for feeding dogs cats ferrets readily available vegan pet foods that have been out for over 30 years without any recalls.

1. They have been sold publically with never any recalls, not one, never any published cases of sick or dead pets due to the foods for over 30 years now world wide.

There have been in contrast THOUSANDS of deaths and sick dogs and cats from proven caused by pet foods of non vegan content. In 2020...5 out of 7 recalls by the government pet food authorities were RAW pet foods.

Those FACTS are easily verifiable as the Government Food Authorities publish public notices of recalls of petfoods easily found by a simple google search and reproduced in many websites and online sources.

2. There are government pet food authorities who set the standards and control recalls of any lacking or causing serious health or death problems pet foods.

In the USA this is the FDA and the standard setters are AAFCO. In Europe this is the FEDIAF.

These are independant nutrition scientific experts...not earning from selling any pet foods but independant standard setters and controllers of pet foods.

3. All pet foods sold publically have by law to be "species appropriate" and by labels state if "complete" and for what life stages.

There are laws governing these issues and therefore it is totally incorrect to speak of vegan pet foods not being "species appropriate" as by LAW that is what they are if sold to the public.

4. There are many health benefits well documented from freeding vegan pet foods.

There are many prescription pet foods that since decades have been mostly vegan to cure many health problems in many dogs and cats.

Both those statements are easily verifiable by easy google searches and knowledge of what are in prescription pet foods and why. Many cats dogs have allergies to animal pet foods is a fact.

Many heart diseases are alleviated by feeding plant based foods.

5. Many not peer reviewed websites make erroneous statements about vegan pet foods.

One has to be aware of influences of the meat industry on those linked to earning from the pet foods they recommend.

TAURINE is a matter many seemingly knowledgeable websites get very wrong....and any review of the details on labels on pet foods of the TAURINE content would reveal that it is synthetic so vegan in all commercial cat foods so those claiming it is only found in meat and that vegan cat foods would make a cat go blind or die due to lack of taurine...are totally wrong...and have not understood the first point about PET FOOD LAWS controlling pet foods as well as the taurine nutrient source of all commercial cat foods.

Those are the NUTRITIONAL reasons for feeding cats and dogs vegan.

Now to the ETHICAL VEGAN reason.

6. Veganism means..."animals are not ours to use"

So breeding and killing animals is simply not vegan.

7. Cruelty...ethical not legal cruelty...is an important distinction.

One needs to realise...there is a difference between "cruelty" as defined by the LAW...for which animal welfare act laws exist...which allow killing of animals legally as not cruel as defined by the law...nor is vegan legal pet food "cruel" of course per the law.

The ETHICAL judgemental view of "cruelty" that sees as veganism does the breeding and killing of animals as "cruelty" is what vegans believe in ethically.

Therefore...there is a huge distinction between describing feeding an animal food as cruel as compared to killing an animal.

The 2 actions are totally incomparable i suggest. Anyone who thinks they are similar needs to re examine their ideas or explain why they would be similar.

Before anyone writes accusing anyone of "cruelty" and "forcing things on animals" again on this topic...

Can i ask..that ALL such comments.....include mention of the "cruelty" of "forcing death" on forced into existance as prisoners captive baby life stage animals owned by humans.

Describe...what "cruelty" is involved in putting food in a dish that an animal clearly thrives on and does not ever die of...compared to..the "cruelty" of force breeding animals and forcing them to die as babies ? i mean most killed animals are between 1 day old and a few months old when killed by humans...so far...there are 20 year old healthy vegan fed cats around and less old vegan fed dogs albeit Bramble famous example lived to age 25 similarly to her unrelated companion dogs.

There are legal definitions of what "cruelty" to animals is...and nowhere is pet food included as one of them.

Morally if not legally cruelty is surely killing baby animals ? if anyone does not think so...then explain that or admit one is not vegan if not believing this to be true.

Do people talking of "forcing things" on animals owned by humans think animals owned by humans that are slaughtered to willingly to their deaths ?

Do people talking of "forcing things on animals humans own" not think forcing death on these animals is not forcing them ?

My view....is that "animals are not ours to use"

So as baby chicks...lambs...turkeys...fish...are not ours to use...i have no right as a vegan to take their lives.

What is not mine...is not mine to take the life of.

i see no cruelty meaning suffering or death in 20 year old vet tested healthy vegan cats and vet tested healthy long lived vegan dogs. Bramble 25 years lived healthy vegan dog famous example is well known and several companions fed the same not related dogs lived similar long lives with Anne Heritage the owner.

Working Huskies scientific peer reviwed studies showed vegan fed working huskies out per formed the meat fed ones...and there is no breed needing more high quality energy than a working huskey.

That study as well as other PEER REVIEWED scientific studies on vegan diets for pet dogs and cats and reference to Little Tyke the famous vegetarian Lioness in the USA who never ate meat at all and never had any health issues due to diet are referenced in this website in particular of highly qualified international expert Dr Andrew Knight...

PEER REVIEWED means not just individual vet or individual scientist views...but checked verified as independant valid conclusions by independant experts.
