According to this database, which compiles "corporate news reports of people killed by nonmilitary law enforcement officers, whether in the line of duty or not, and regardless of reason or method".
 
That seems to be a low number to me, considering that around 10,000 people get killed with firearms (homicides, suicides is a higher number) every year in the US (2010/2012 statistics).

About 1 % of those killed by cops, sounds reasonable :cool:
 
Cops are supposed to protect the citizens, not kill them.

From what I've read the military has given them advanced weapons. I wouldn't be surprised if this is intentional.
