This study was conducted by scientists from Australia, the USA, and Rothamsted Research in the UK. It found that higher whole grain cereal intakes are associated with substantially lower risks of type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and hypertension. The paper was published in Biofactors.

Whole grains, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and hypertension: Links to the aleurone preferred over indigestible fiber. (PubMed abstract)

(Part of the research behind this study was conducted at the facility where I work!)

Firstly, to maintain health, 40 grams or more of whole grains should be consumed daily. This is about a bowl of whole grain breakfast cereal daily, but 80% of the population does not achieve this.

I think I'm making up for a lot of them. :D

But seriously, this is good news for me- diabetes and cardiovascular disease run in my Dad's and Mom's families, respectively.
