Soon they'll be taking over... (And given the present political climate, that might not be a bad thing :p)

An artificial intelligence system being developed at Facebook has created its own language. It developed a system of code words to make communication more efficient. Researchers shut the system down when they realized the AI was no longer using English.

The observations made at Facebook are the latest in a long line of similar cases. In each instance, an AI being monitored by humans has diverged from its training in English to develop its own language. The resulting phrases appear to be nonsensical gibberish to humans but contain semantic meaning when interpreted by AI "agents."...

I guess the big question is whether it's simply unavoidable that AIs will eventually develop consciousness, the ability to self-replicate, and then take over the world. If the AIs don't need humans to thrive and sustain themselves, what will they do with us? Will they regard humans as a threat?

It seems certain that we will continue to develop AIs and make them increasingly more powerful and sophisticated.Various groups (scientists, nation-states, corporations) are competing for prestige and influence, so they will use every advantage they can to get an edge over their competitors. Imagine a powerful AI under human control that could devise a strategy for its country / corporation / university to improve its influence, military power, wealth and so on. It's a very tempting prospect for a lot of people.
