Can anyone recommend a freeware "NotePad" replacement that would allow me to do things like highlight selected paragraphs in a text file, or change the font of these select paragraphs only, etc.? Or do I have to go to a full-fledged word processing program to do things like this with text? I am looking for something as simple as possible.

Ah yes, notepad and presumably notepad++ are only doing plain text. Wordpad can also do text with different fonts and sizes, bold, italics, underline text and more. I.e. text formatting. I think that's what is meant by the term "word processor".

Yes, looks like Wordpad is the best choice for what I was looking for. I wanted the simplest program that would do the job.
