Elephants used in circuses and traveling shows spend much of their lives chained in reeking boxcars and tractor-trailers as they are hauled from one venue to the next. They learn to obey confusing commands or get hit with a bullhook, a weapon resembling a fireplace poker that is used to keep elephants afraid and submissive. Circuses like Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus forcibly remove baby elephants from their frantic mothers so that they can be broken and trained to perform silly tricks.

Elephants who extend their trunks to comfort a friend or check something out suffer a painful blow. A fumbled trick during the show results in a beating. Elephants in circuses live miserable lives of punishment and confinement and are denied everything that is natural and important to them.

Bolivia, Greece, Austria, Paraguay, and cities around the world have banned or are in the process of banning traveling animal acts. Los Angeles should take a step in the right direction and pass compassionate legislation that would protect elephants.

You Can Help
Please let the members of the Los Angeles City Council know that you strongly support protecting elephants used in circuses.

Thanks. Los Angeles is a big market for them, it'll be great to get a ban.

It's only a small list of countries as seen above that have banned all animal acts, but there is a huge list of cities. So, we are slowly getting there.

Not quick enough for my liking. France and the UK still exploit animals in circuses. A circus owner in the UK
was taken to court recently for cruelty to Anne, a very old elephant and he just got a suspended sentence !!!!

They've pushed forward the proposal to discuss banning elephant acts. Fingers crossed it passes. Of course, Ringling Bros is fighting it.

Amid discussions of tax increases and medical marijuana, the Los Angeles City Council will soon add elephants to its agenda.
On Tuesday, the city's Personnel and Animal Welfare Committee decided to move forward a pachyderm-prohibiting proposal that would ban the use of elephants in traveling shows and exhibits that stop in L.A.
Also up for debate will be the use of bull hooks and "other implements and tools designed to inflict pain for the purpose of training and controlling the behavior of elephants."
Councilman Paul Koretz, who heads the committee, put forth the proposal.
Some have voiced opposition, including Feld Entertainment Inc., which includes Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Ringling Bros. visits L.A. each year, and in a June 4 letter addressed to Koretz, Feld said the proposal would not "enhance or increase elephant welfare or protection" and "threatens the circus industry."
But supporters heralded the committee's decision. Tim Phillips, vice president of Animal Defenders International, called it a "very important step forward."
