I did a couple of articles on this forum in January last year at the time to help me understand the vegan lifestyle. I want to thank everyone for helping me at that time when I first joined the forum. e.g. Andy, Tom, Indian Summer, and many others. I don't need any help any more, and I have actually tried helping others myself on online forums now I've learnt more.
In January 2016, I gave up meat, fish and eggs and became vegetarian. I haven't eaten any of those foods since then and I don't think I ever will again.
I stopped eating cheese in February 2016, and stopped using non-vegan toiletries in March, and cut out other things after that. I fully agree with the arguments behind the vegan lifestyle but have not (yet) applied these strictly enough to count myself as a vegan yet, for example I sometimes eat bread without checking if it is vegan. However I have tended closer to being a vegan over the year.
My health has been just as good on a mostly vegan lifestyle. I was not ill for a single day (I rarely got ill when I ate meat either, so this is no change). I did a before and after health check and blood tests and all is fine, I can post some results if anyone is interested.
I lost about 8 kilos in the first months of the year and reached my ideal weight. As an omnivore, I was having to choose between putting or weight or going hungry. Now, it has been much better.
I have started going running again, and it's faster and easier than it used to be. So certainly no issue with athletic performance!
I don't miss meat at all. I do sometimes miss being able to buy chocolate and ice cream while out somewhere or when someone offers to me, but it is not that big a deal.
My brother in England cut his meat quite considerably after listening to my arguments, but has not gone vegetarian. Here in Chile there were a couple of my wife's family who seemed quite receptive to my arguments and were considering going vegetarian, but are pretty slow to follow through. I hope to influence others more in time.
I tried to sign up to work for the main animal rights group in South America. I went to see them in person, messaged them on facebook, emailed them etc etc, but they never get back to me. I eventually gave up, for now, but may look into this more one day.
I think is a great and more ethical lifestyle and I'm really happy I took this decision. I think looking thoroughly into the ethical (including environmental) issues is the key to then being in the right place to handle any difficulties (not that I've really had any so far).
Best wishes to you all and I hope you are doing well.
