This morning I went for a walk on the moor in beautiful sunshine. While I was busily admiring the bilberry buds beginning their attempts at flowering I very nearly trod on a tiny grouse chick. It was far too young to be able to flee into hiding on my approach. It was wonderfully camouflaged and I might not have spotted it had it not given a violent shiver. A fantastic little creature.

Sadly the chances of it surviving very long after August are poor. Some people travel to the North York Moors from as far away as Germany often paying well in excess of £1000 per day. This entitles them to stand at the butts and shoot the birds that are driven towards them by the beaters.

Roger.
