Melancholy was once considered a source of one of the then deadly sins, acedia - the neglect to take care of something one should do. (Like going to bed before it's in the middle of the night ...) Melancholy is a sort of mourning. It was considered one of the four temperaments in pre-modern medicine. In astrology it showed the influence of Saturn, hence the related adjective 'saturnine'.
