News London, Europe's biggest city, elects Muslim Mayor

Socialist, schmosialist. He's a Labour politician and: "Ideologically, he is situated on the moderate social democratic wing of the party." (According to Wikipedia.) Just saying.

^^^Well, duh... our President, for one! (just kidding)

Seriously, I think there are a number of Muslims in elected positions, but they're not common and I honestly can't think any.

This was on the radio in my area. I'll admit I was a little surprised, although I didn't know anything about the campaign leading up to Khan's election.

And conservatives freaked out when he took the oath of office on a Koran instead of a bible.

one problem I have with swearing on the bible, or any book, is that it implies you agree and believe everything in the book; everything...

Congratulations to Mr. Kahn and all Londoners.

A Question: Some of the videos in the BBC story had notices on them "This video contains flash photography" following a red circle with a white G inside. What is the purpose of such notices? I have never seen such notices before.

I haven't seen the circle with the G in it, but such warnings are for people who are susceptible to epileptic fits...so they can look away, or turn over.

Someone in my compute club, at a school had an epileptic fit, from the VDUs I suppose.

Thank you. :) I would have guessed that if I had to guess. But then I have to ask myself why the BBC is sensitive to this issue while no one else seems to care.

They see themselves as having a duty of care towards their viewers, where as some channels just want to make money..maybe it is written into the BBC code of broadcasting, or whatever they have.

Flashing images, strobing & photo sensitive epilepsy
To minimise the risk to viewers who have photosensitive epilepsy we should follow the Ofcom guidance referred to in rule 2.13 of the Ofcom Broadcasting Code. On rare occasions it may not be reasonably practicable to follow this guidance, as when flashing content is unavoidable, for example in a live news report, and when it cannot be remedied technically but when it is editorially justified. In such cases our audience should be given a verbal and, if appropriate, a text warning at the start of the programme or programme item.

I assumed Sadiq would win so I thought I might as well vote Green as well as you get first and second preference.

During the race I always thought that Sadiq Khan looked like he was reading lines from a script and he mentioned his father being a bus driver and growing up on a council estate thing about a million times!

Saying that, he was just on TV being interviewed and I think he seems a lot more confident and a lot less stiff, so I hope he does a good job as mayor.

Yeah, conservatives here in the US are freaking out. :p

I have been reading about that. It's strange as I thought the mayoral race was quite dull and none of the candidates filled me with much enthusiasm, but the result has caused quite a stir.:D

Interesting article about Siân Berry. If you don't mind my asking, what is the derivation of her first name, Siân?
Is it Irish? Welsh? I could not find any information about this in the Wikipedia article about her nor on her website.
