It was at these events where Bush met most of the servicemen and servicewomen who inspired his art and his exemplary book “Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors.” The book features Bush’s portraits of America’s bravest men and women.

Bush befriended many of them and came to know many, along with their families. Perhaps that is why the 98 portraits in this wonderfully designed book seem so intimate and powerful. Each painting somehow captures part of the world these men and women have known—the horrors of war, but also the courage of service and strength of survival.
