According to UK research done a year ago by Barclays 92% of plant-based meals are consumed by flexitarians who want to reduce their intake of animal products because of animal welfare concerns, health reasons and concern for the environment.

This week Unilever announced an ambitious plan to be selling one billion euro worth of vegan food every year by 2027. No doubt this will be accompanied by a huge advertising campaign emphasising welfare, health and the environment.

Hopefully the products will be prominently labelled “Vegan” because flexitarians recognise the word as representing what they are searching for. This, in turn, should lead many more people completing a journey to full veganism.

At the very least a marketing campaign will lead to more sales of animal free products and hence fewer sales of meat and dairy produce. And this has to be good for the animals.
