The study, which followed 4000 people over five years, is “one of the largest and longest of its kind”, according to a statement from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), which funded the research. Four groups of people were given an inactive dummy pill, omega-3 on its own, two nutrients found in green leafy vegetables, or omega-3 plus the vegetable compounds.
“Contrary to popular belief, we didn’t see any benefit of omega-3 supplements for stopping cognitive decline”, says study author Dr Emily Chew, deputy clinical director at the National Eye Institute, which is part of the NIH.
