Prussia won the Franco-Prussian war, and took over Alsace-Lorraine. The French desperately wanted it back, so it's safe to say it was a major factor as to why France fought in World War 1. France lost in the Franco-Prussian war very easily, so their government had to know casualties would be very heavy the second time around. Obviously in this case the French government thought territory was worth fighting over, but they weren't the most caring individuals in the world. Do you think territory is worth fighting for, even if it may mean huge casualties?

Humans all over the world have been killing and dying over territory pretty much as long as there have been humans. It's not unique to humans either - there are other species who do it also. Sometimes it's a matter of survival, sometimes it's just a matter of enrichment, or to maintain a certain lifestyle. Unfortunately, those who benefit from it are rarely willing to give up the lifestyle benefits, much as they may decry the fighting and deaths.

Well, I'm not going to volunteer to go fighting for Norway to take back Bohuslän, Jämtland and Herjedalen from Sweden. It would be pretty silly for western European countries in general to fight amongst themselves about territory these days as the political systems are so similar, and the culture isn't all that different either.
