The Oaks Club in Sarasota Florida will be destroying a major bird nesting area, probably tomorrow - 12/26! They have not followed the advice of the Audubon Society on how to protect the birds. Many of these birds will not find another protected place to nest and will be subject to predators. Please call The Oaks today and leave a message on any extention then call tomorrow and talk to a live person. Call 941-966-2161 to voice your displeasure. This is where the 1% live, don't let them destroy the birds habitat - they were there first!!!" - Mark Vance

Why: The Oaks is an upscale community where The Oaks Club brags about their golfers respecting the environment by sharing habitat with Sandhill cranes, blue herons, egrets, eagles, turtles and all sorts of native Florida wildlife. Some of the golfers and residents do not enjoy sharing with wildlife and have convinced their board of directors to get permits to destroy 90% of the islands that are home to thousands of birds where they lay their eggs in a safe place.
Animal protectionists have pleaded with the Oaks Board to adopt a moderate approach by gradually removing about 30% annually of the non-native plants on the islands as proposed by a Fish and Wildlife biologist and Audubon Societies of Sarasota, Venice and Florida, and planting native plants so the islands are not raped and plundered where the birds will flee and be displaced.

In the past I've tried to help in saving a small island used for nesting by sea birds near my home place in Norway. It's been a very difficult task, but recently the protectionists won a small at least temporary victory, when authorities forced the "developers" to stop the work and follow proper municipality planning procedures. This will take at least another year, and even then the plans may not be approved. So there is hope.

These efforts are difficult because you need to know laws and regulations, you need to devote time and effort in writing letters of complaint to the correct authorities etc. And often you are up against people with infinite resources (money, lawyers, and "researchers" for hire).
