That is disturbing. I'm not the biggest fan of flying, and I have on occasion checked out the pilot (if he is standing there greeting people, which sometimes they do) on the way into the plane to see whether he's got clear eyes and no red nose.

On short and medium haul flights, we never get to see the pilots. However, on the long haul ones and depending on the airport, you often do see the entire crew.
Apparently it was the other crew members who called 999 as his breath was wreaking of alcohol. Moreover it was a very long flight ; 12 hours or so.
