Health Issues Low HDL,High Triglycerides & Liver enzymes

Thank you so much for sharing these experiences with us. I have been having exactly the same problem. A 73 year old, I became vegan via vegetarian about three years ago. For the first two years it was fine. I lost quite a lore of weight and most of my blood work returned to normal levels. I had...

    Natto

You did everything right. Natto will keep very well in the fridge for a week or so but it’s better fresh of course. We are a very “natto” family and enjoy it on toast, in miso soup and on spaghetti. Just the same as you prepared yours and just plopped on.

    How you do your Groceries?

I’m an English person living in Japan. I had the same problem learning theJapanese words for the ingredients. But I got used to it fairly soon. Here most bread is out as butter and milk are frequently added. As above, the safe bread is almost always French. Good luck!

    Cold sores being vegan

As several people have commented B1, B2 and B4 are indicated for skin problems. I take a supplement containing these called Chocola BB. I live in Japan so this a Japanese product. It is so popular here that you will probably find it in any large Japanese/Asian market or pharmacy. I only take...

Venting about my mom + family

Yes, thank you for sharing. I hope your family all find a way to living a healthy life. However. Get a life. You are an adult and sorry to say this but as a mother of three adult sons I have to say, you have to find a way to stop putting it all on what you hint are “deadbeat” parents. It’s no...

    Using animals after death?

The Victorians were into death in a big way, I think, so they had lots of Memento Mori, but I think most of us nowadays have a strong taboo against things like photographs of dead people and trinkets made from ashes or bones. One of my sons had a photo of a baby on his table and “Who’s this?” I...

    Using animals after death?

Thank you for the really interesting post. Here in Japan, for people and most pets, cremation is the way to go. There is a small “niche” business in producing memento Mori from the ashes. Usually jewel-like stones mounted in rings or pendants. Interesting conversation starter. “How do you like...

    Natto

Lol! Here in Japan the population is split right down the middle on one side those who love it and the others who think it is like eating vomit. I love it. If you can get over the appearance it tastes like strong smelly cheese like Stilton.

    Natto

Hi there, Forest! I have just been talking about you to my son who is not vegan but eats what he’s given. “How about Shikoku for a vegan backpacker?” I asked. “Oh, dear.” He said. Not much of a place for vegans was his opinion. He says that it’s very strongly fish eating for a start and very...

I’m not sure about the rice as I don’t know about what brands are available with you. The rice everybody eats here is the “Japonica” variety. Just buy a small amount and try it. Rice pudding rice also works fairly well as do some of the short grain Californian and Italian rice. The sort of thing...

    Natto

I think I fall between these two opinions. The point here for me personally is the bonito which is used to make the flakes to make the soup base and almost every other dish here in Japan. You have to be very knowledgeable and a good cook to get around it. Because I feel so sorry for the poor...

    Natto

Cont. These traditional restaurant can be very expensive, not your typical back packers haunt. I would say, impractical. The main problem is the soup. If I were that hungry I would eat the noodles regardless or the soup. I live here so am not dependent on shops for food and always pack...

    Natto

I would say it can be difficult but mainly the problem is with eating out and with ready prepared foods. There is a lot of choice especially if you are prepared to make everything from scratch and only eat out at places you know are vegan or have some foods on the menu that are and don’t mind...

Yep! I’m vegan and I’m in Japan. Not easy but doable. Natto is my friend.

    Natto

That’s true about paying for the animal products. If that was important to you you’d have to go to the big natto manufacturing areas where they sell it packed in straw with out the little packets and eat that. Specialist stuff. Here in Japan some people make it themselves, I’m pretty sure you...

    Natto

Oops! My reply is up there somewhere. Anyway, love natto and so do my kids. With rice of course but also with spaghetti and also on toast. Yum.

    Natto

I love natto too and we have it about twice a week or so. I agree with the cheese thing. If you liked strong cheese or other fermented flavors you’ll probably like natto. We like it with spaghetti and on toast. Again, with the scallions, soy sauce and mustard.

    Vegan Food-Tokyo

Thanks a lot. Living near Tokyo it’s nice to know there are places to eat when I’m in the big city for a day out. The prices are eye-watering but that’s Tokyo!
